As we ease into the Thanksgiving holiday this year, some people wonder if Thanksgiving is still relevant. Modern communication networks put us on the scene of every chaotic event in every state and country – and the chaos that is seen throughout the world spreads sorrow with it….sorrow that tends to cling to our emotions and ask, “Where was God?” But, times like that can actually strengthen, rather than hinder our faith and our hope in God. They are merely times to defend the hope that is within us.
That short discourse between Jesus and the apostles seems puzzling. These men had been traveling with Jesus and they had seen miracle after miracle. They believed Jesus. Yet, they asked Him to increase their faith. Does that imply there may be different levels of faith?
We, clearly, are under instruction to teach our children about… the laws our God has established, His love and compassion, the power of our God and the wondrous truth about the death and resurrection of Jesus
First Peter 1:13 tells us to “gird up the loins of our mind.” That seems like a strange statement, doesn’t it? But, Peter is merely using a phrase that is specific to his time in history to tell us that we have work to do….. “gird up” means to strengthen your ability. In biblical times, men pulled up the hem of their long garment; and tucked it into their waistband so they could do hard labor or run at a fast pace without their robe hampering their legs – or their ability
The Bible tells us a story about Abraham, who was the father of the nation of Israel. His title is much like George Washington being called the father of our country. In this story, Abraham sent a trusted servant to his home country to find a wife for his son, Isaac. When the servant arrived in the land of Abraham’s tribe, he stopped near the community water-well where the village women came for water at the end of the day.
